The 1990s saw a great deal of political change in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and the country’s first democratic elections took place in 1994. Political changes also meant a change in the business climate. Sanctions against South Africa were lifted and it became possible for local companies to access global markets more easily.

New markets

H.G. Molenaar continued to refine and improve its products and Germany became an important market for Molenaar’s range of palletizing equipment. Molenaar Rotary Sterilizers found new homes in Germany.

In the late 1990s, Australia also started ordering systems and, since entering this new market in 1998, all Rotary Sterilizer orders in Australia have been awarded to H.G. Molenaar.

Agents of excellence

The agency business grew rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s. H.G. Molenaar entered the ink-jet coding business in partnership with Willett of the UK. The company also ventured into the fresh fruit labeling business through its representation of UK-based Sinclair International. Towards the end of the 1990s, H.G. Molenaar entered a joint venture with Sinclair to form Simoco, a label manufacturing business to support the demand for labels in the South African market.
